Electric or petrol car — Kyiv

Input: Kyiv, 5 years, 15,000 km/yr; typical dated prices

Over 5 years at 15,000 km/yr the lower NPV is Electric car. But the ranges overlap: with your prices the order can flip.

Bar — NPV range from cheap to expensive assumptions, dot — typical result; one scale for all alternatives.

Warnings

  • Medium[ev] Price defaults older than 6 months: price.public_dc_kwh (2026-01-23). Enter current prices.
  • Note[petrol] Pension-insurance levy 4% of the price at first registration in Ukraine (new or imported car; set options.first_registration=false for a car already registered in Ukraine).
  • Lowpetrol vs ev: the NPV ranges overlap — the order can flip with real prices.
  • LowSome defaults come from secondary pages or are tcogen estimates and are marked for verification (docs/SOURCES.md); replace them with your own figures where you can: car_depreciation_estimate, car_prices_estimate, car_service_estimate, ev_battery_warranty, ev_consumption_estimate, ice_consumption_estimate, tcogen_finance_defaults, tripgen_osago_kb, ua_ev_charging_2026.

Assumptions

  • Amounts are nominal (today's prices grown by inflation); NPV discounts them to today.
  • Scheduled events due exactly at the horizon are not counted: the asset is sold or kept then, and its resale value is the negative line `resale`.
  • Consumables are bought when the previous item runs out; the last item bought is counted in full.
  • Range low/high: every ranged input at its cheaper or dearer end together — a deliberately wide band.
  • [ev] Discount rate 12.0%/year (nominal, UA default); pass discount_rate — e.g. your deposit or loan rate.
  • [ev] Prices grow 8.0%/year (UA default); fixed-by-law taxes and loan payments do not.
  • [petrol] Discount rate 12.0%/year (nominal, UA default); pass discount_rate — e.g. your deposit or loan rate.
  • [petrol] Prices grow 8.0%/year (UA default); fixed-by-law taxes and loan payments do not.
  • Ranking: lowest NPV first, then lowest levelized cost per unit of use, then label and id. The order of input does not matter, and nothing about sellers or partners is known to it.
  • Break-even usage scales both alternatives' usage together; crossover month compares cumulative discounted spending without resale.

Questions

Is an electric car cheaper than petrol in Kyiv?

It depends on mileage. In the engine's example at 15,000 km/yr the lower NPV goes to: Electric car (crossover month 45); at 8,000 km/yr: Petrol car. They break even at about 9,220 km/yr. The ranges overlap: use your own prices.

And in Germany?

At 12,000 km/yr the example puts Petrol car first, by €411, and the ranges overlap. Fuel, power and taxes differ, so the Kyiv result does not carry over.

What does a page cost on a home printer?

At 1,500 pages/yr the levelised cost per page in the example: Ink-tank printer UAH 1.49/page; Mono laser UAH 2.75/page; Cartridge inkjet UAH 6.41/page. Counted by ISO cartridge yield, including the printer price and resale.

Power station or generator for outages — which is cheaper?

At 300 kWh/yr: LFP power station UAH 46.84/kWh; Petrol generator UAH 94.86/kWh. Station battery wear is about UAH 11.11 per kWh. Sizing for your loads is another tool — homegen.

What is NPV and why not just a sum?

NPV is the sum of all payments with future money discounted (12% a year in the example). That way a purchase today and fuel years later compare fairly.
